A bit about pen pals:
When I was younger, my sister had a pen pal. Well, she had a couple, and maybe I had one too, but the one that was the most memorable was this girl in Australia. I lived vicariously through that pen pal. I can’t remember her name, but I remember that she had cool pens, nice handwriting, and could draw stars really well. She and my sister would make tape recordings and mail them with their notes because they liked hearing each other’s voices. It was pretty cool. I have memories of sitting in my sister’s room with her listening to her pen pal talk about whatever was happening on her side of the world. It really was fascinating.
Since moving to Texas, we’re trying to keep Amelia’s friendship with her bff and her cousins alive by Skyping. It’s sort of like today’s version of pen pals, and it works alright for the weirdness that three-year-olds have to talk about and the immediacy that they need. But maybe when they get older, they’ll write letters to each other.
I’m really excited about my recently acquired pen pal, Heather! It may be a pen pal faux paus to blog about something that you haven’t sent yet, but you don’t care, do you Heather? I’ll probably send your letter tomorrow. :)
If anyone else wants to be pen pals, just let me know. I can’t promise anything amazing, like the cool kids over at Quarterly Co., but you never know. Plus it’s just really cool to get mail.
